YOUR CAPTAIN
Doug Sabo is a lifelong adventurer, mentor, and guide whose work blends wilderness experience, personal growth, and creative expression. As a co-founder with Soltreks, he has dedicated years to facilitating transformational journeys in remote natural settings, helping participants build resilience, self-awareness, and a deeper connection to both nature and themselves.
Doug’s path began with his own early adventures as a young adult, in the summer of 1980, Doug and a friend hopped freight trains from Southern California to Northern Minnesota, exploring the life of a hobo, documenting the experience with his 35 mm camera and embracing the challenges and freedom of traveling by train and sparking his adventurous spirit and love for photography.
He started sailing in 1990 and has since explored the coastal and open waters of Lake Superior, teaching young adults the art of sailing, seamanship, and cruising. His instruction goes beyond technical skills, emphasizing teamwork, emotional intelligence, and confidence-building in dynamic, real-world environments.
He is also an avid photographer, using his camera to capture the beauty, stillness, and raw energy of the natural world. His photography reflects both an artistic eye and a deep reverence for the environments he explores
.
These formative experiences shaped his passion for experiential learning and his commitment to guiding others through meaningful, growth-centered journeys.
Through his work on land and sea, Doug Sabo continues to inspire others to step outside their comfort zones, develop practical life skills, and discover a stronger, more grounded sense of self.
